Human Systems Integration: An Essential Enabler to Systems EngineeringTool Integration & Interoperability: What is the big deal, and what are we doing about it?

Thursday, October 15, 2009

At the INCOSE Systems Engineering Vision 2020 Forum, held in February 2006, Human Systems Integration (HSI) was identified as needing increased emphasis in the systems engineering community over the next fifteen years.  HSI focuses on the human, an integral element of every system, over the system life cycle.  HSI provides benefits by bringing the various human-centered domains into the systems engineering process and by serving as the focal point for ensuring that human considerations are taken into account during system design, development, manufacturing, operation, sustainment, and disposal.  This presentation will provide an overview of HSI, particularly  its essential role in the successful execution of a systems engineering project.

Michael W. Mueller is a Systems Engineer in the Applications and Development Division, part of the Air Force Center for Systems Engineering in the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.  He is the Center’s focal point for Human Systems Integration (HSI) and promotes HSI efforts in systems engineering practice.  He is a co-founder and former co-chair of the INCOSE HSI Working Group and serves on the national G-45 HSI Committee of TechAmerica.  Mr. Mueller was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1972 and had a wide variety of assignment involving environmental science, occupational health, industrial hygiene, and health physics during his 23-year military career.  Since retirement from the U.S. Army in 1995, he began his federal Civil Service career at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where he served in a number of different capacities.  In 2004, he assumed his current position in the Air Force Center for Systems Engineering.  Mr. Mueller holds a B.S. degree in Biological Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and a Master of Public Health from The Johns Hopkins University.  He has earned a Level III Certification in Systems Planning, Research, Development, and Engineering, and a Level I Certification in Program Management from the federal Acquisition Professional Development Program.
