Turning Computer Logs into Company Assets

Thursday, March 19, 2009

Many computer systems today are becoming more complex.  What was complex five years ago is more complex today and will become even more complex in the future.  Companies, because of increased global competition and products and services becoming more complex, want their systems to do more, to be more efficient, and to provide increased value.   Because of the increased complexity, computer systems are generating a great amount of log data—from gigabytes up to terabytes—as log files, which contain a record of system events.  This presentation discusses how to take these events and turn them into company assets.  Dr. Ibarra will particularly focus on the Business Centric Log Management (BCLM) methodology, with emphasis on the Systems Engineering discipline. He will also discuss how log management and analysis software can use the BCLM concept to improve system monitoring.

Dr. Gerard Ibarra is the President and CEO of Buildwave Technologies, Inc., a software and technology company that provides solutions to help companies identify, track, and analyze the events generated by their systems.  Previously, he ran his own consulting business focusing on logistics systems engineering, life cycle costs analysis, and marketing.  He has worked in the logistics, business operations, and marketing fields.  He received his Ph.D. in Applied Science from Southern Methodist University, where he also received an M.S. in Systems Engineering and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.  He is an adjunct professor in the graduate engineering and business programs for SMU and the University of Dallas, respectively.
