June Speaker Dr Tom Herald
The Seven Affordability Sins of Logistics System Integration
Thursday, June 18, 2009
Dr. Tom Herald is a Principle Engineer and Senior Manager with the Simulation, Training, and Support division of Lockheed Martin. He has over 25 years of experience at IBM, Loral, and Lockheed Martin. His specialties include technology obsolescence management, systems engineering, and enterprise systems. The focus of his research has been to provide the systems engineer with an integrated approach for the development and execution of technology obsolescence management. He received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park, and a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology. He serves as an Industry Associate Professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology. He is also the Vice President, and President-Elect, of the INCOSE Orlando Chapter.
The focus and funding of systems engineering projects has traditionally been centered on delivering tactical systems. This approach has been successful for many years but today does not lead to the most affordable and mission-ready systems. A more holistic approach is to focus on delivering mission capabilities. This approach incorporates metalogistics (which includes traditional logistics), primary system design and deployment, and the support business model. In this presentation, Dr. Tom Herald will discuss how to improve the affordability of mission success by avoiding the seven common mistakes, also known as “The Seven Affordabity Sins”, that are made during the execution of a systems engineering project.
