Lecture Topic: Universal Architecture Framework
Specification development can be accomplished to good effect in a timely and affordable fashion if the program applies a series of fundamentally sound practices. This topic discusses those fundamentals that begin with the use of a set of specification templates providing a standard structure and content found acceptable to the customer base. These templates should be coordinated with specific functional departments that will provide programs with people skilled in the identification and definition of requirements in the assigned categories and with specific models and methods the assigned people will employ in doing so. The enterprise and its programs should employ structured analysis methods and have a way to capture and configuration control the analysis work products from which the requirements flowing into the specifications are derived. The organization should have in place a common process through which the work is accomplished employing a documented process calling for requirements identification using a structured analysis model resulting in capture of all requirements in a requirements analysis sheet (RAS) implemented in a computer database. The requirements analysis and specification publishing process should be well managed, of course, including thoughtful consideration for potential risks. Finally, everyone doing this work should have been qualified to do the work through training and/or experience.
Speaker Biography: Jeffrey O. Grady, M.S., ESEP
Jeff is a charter member of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). He was made a Fellow in 2001, cited for “industrial education in the systems engineering field and for establishing the role of INCOSE as a teaching organization.” He was selected as a Founder in 2003, cited for “his seminal role in founding NCOSE, his service as its Secretary, his leadership in inaugurating and editing the Systems Engineering Journal, and his major contributions to systems engineering education.” Jeff is recognized as an Expert System Engineering Professional (ESEP) by INCOSE. He authored nine books in the systems engineering field: System Management, CRC Press, 2010; System Synthesis, CRC Press 2010; System Verification, Elsevier Academic Press 2007; System Requirements Analysis, Elsevier Academic Press, 2006; System Engineering Deployment, CRC Press, 1999; System Validation and Verification, CRC Press, 1997; System Engineering Planning and Enterprise Identity, CRC Press, 1995; System Integration, CRC Press, 1994; and System Requirements Analysis, McGraw-Hill, 1993. He holds an MS in Systems Management from USC with a certificate in Information Systems, a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from SDSU, and certificate in Systems Engineering from UCSD.
